Thursday 27 February 2025 River's Rats and Rodents visits the EYFS This week we had an exciting visitor in the EYFS, River came to say hello and he brought with him 5 exciting pets: a lizard, a tortoise, a corn snake, a long-haired guinea pig and a dumbo rat! This experience truly enriched our weekly focus of pets and gave the children an opportunity to learn about some more obscure pets, they practiced their speaking skills by asking lots of questions and I was so proud of how many of them stroked and held the different animals. What a fabulous start to the new term and our 'Animal Safari' topic!

Wednesday 26 February 2025 The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield This week be began our new writing unit based around the story, 'The Darkest Dark' by Chris Hadfield. Our first lesson was an oracy based lesson. We made predictions about the book using the front cover and explored a range of images linked to the text. The children used all the skills they have been learning to support them in debating questions about the images. Very well done Year 5... a great start to the unit!

Friday 14 February 2025 Survival Of The Fittest! As part of our creative, outdoor learning we took part in a series of Team Challenges. These ranged from an end of term mixed topic quiz to a plastic recycling task.

Friday 14 February 2025 Clay crafting This week, we have been excited to explore the wonderful world of clay crafting, where creativity meets tradition. This week, we have focused on a unique project inspired by the famous Bankura Horses of Bengal. Our sessions aim to not only refine our students' clay skills but also immerse them in the rich cultural heritage behind these artistic creations.

Friday 31 January 2025 Stamping around! This week's art lesson saw us turn our attention to the natural world. We combined a variety of printmaking techniques and materials to create a print on a theme and to represent the detailed patterns found in natural phenomena, such as water, weather or animal skins.

Thursday 30 January 2025 Fabric Crumbs! Today we had such a lovely afternoon! We continued our 'Mixed Media' unit in art by learning about different fabrics and started to make our 'fabric crumbs'. Year 5 had to carefully select fabrics using their understanding of line, texture, shape and colour and layer them carefully to create a fabric collage. We will be continuing these over the coming weeks and look forward to sharing our final pieces with you. Well done Year 5 - you are amazing!

Wednesday 29 January 2025 Chinese New Year! To celebrate Chinese New Year, the year of the wood snake, we created our own colourful snakes. The children enjoyed learning about the celebration. They found out they were either born in the year of the horse or the goat and discovered the characteristics of each animal. Chinese New Year starts today and lasts for 15 days ending with a magnificent lantern festival. Well done to Year 5 for such beautiful snakes!

Tuesday 28 January 2025 Neolithic Engineers! In Histony today, we explored the incredible engineering of Neolithic people. With very limited technology ( stone tools, rope and wood) they created the marvel that is Stone Henge, which even aligned with the Sun on the solstices.

Sunday 26 January 2025 What are our 5 senses? We investigated our 5 senses by just focusing on one sense to predict what we could hear, smell, touch, see and taste. The children wrote down their predictions on their white boards. What could you feel in the box? What could you smell? What could you taste when you couldn't feel or see it?

Friday 24 January 2025 Run, Run As Fast As You Can! This week in the EYFS we have been reading the story 'The Gingerbread Man' as part of our Stories and Rhymes topic. We couldn't pass by the opportunity to make our very own gingerbread men so that is what we did! In our topic sessions the children took it in turns over the course of the week to weigh and combine the ingredients, form and roll the dough and cut and bake the gingerbread men. They were delicious! The children have not only developed their baking skills this week but this activity has enabled them to explore language involved in cooking, for example weight and capacity: more, less, half full, full etc., techniques: knead, roll, cut, mix etc. and words to describe the sensory aspect of cooking: squidgy dough, delicious biscuits and so many more!

Friday 24 January 2025 Hedgehog Houses It was a blustery day in Forest school today and the rain stayed away. Year R had a fun time exploring all things bugs. We read a brilliant little story to remind us that we are never alone when we are in the garden. There are little creatures and mini beasts everywhere - even if we don't see them.

Friday 10 January 2025 'Robot' algorithms in Class 2! We first discussed how we could get computers to do what we want. We thought about how we might give a computer instructions on different programs or by clicking/ tapping buttons and keys.

Friday 10 January 2025 Headteacher's Reward Afternoon - Chinese Art With Chinese New Year just around the corner (29 Jan 25), our reward afternoon had a Chinese art theme to it this term. I was once taught be a Chinese Calligrapher the basics of how to use a brush and ink to create traditional Bamboo paintings; it has been a few years, but I was able to remember much of what she taught me so that I could share them with the children. We followed 5 steps which was rounded off by finishing the paintings off with a traditional 'Chinese Chop' sign off emblem. Usually, this would be a form of painter's signature (in the red square) but we used a potato print of the word 'Snake' ? (Shé), to mark the start of the Year of the Snake in 2025.

Friday 10 January 2025 Presenting Maths! In maths this week, we have been learning about adding and subtracting fractions including mixed numbers. Year 5 have not only excelled at their mathematical learning but it has been so lovely to see them presenting their learning to the class. In oracy, we have been practising presenting in small groups. It is wonderful to now see how naturally the children are transferring these skills in different lessons. Well done Year 5!

Thursday 9 January 2025 Mapping out Mythology! A very exciting start to the new term in Year 5... we have been mapping out mythology! Our unit this term in writing is focused around the book, 'Arthur and the Golden Rope'by Joe Todd-Stanton. We began this week learning about Norse Mythology and discovered who some of the villains, heroes and monsters are and where they lived in the Norse world. We will be continuing to learn about mythology this term and are looking forward to writing our own myths at the end of the unit and sharing them with you.

Thursday 9 January 2025 Our First PE Lesson This week the children in the EYFS took part in their first ever PE lesson! This term we will be teaching the children a programme called BEAM, this stands for Balance, Education and Movement. The BEAM programme is designed to work children's gross motor skills, they will also have the task of following instructions and mirroring positions made by their teacher or peers.

Thursday 19 December 2024 Designing a market garden This week we have used all the disciplinary skills we have been learning about in geography to design our own market garden in our 'Innovate Journal'. We had to decide a suitable location and give a six-figure grid reference using an ordnance survey map. We then had to describe the geographical features of our site and why we had chosen it. We used our knowledge of seasonality to create a planting and growing plan and decided how we would transport our goods using the transport links in our local area. Well done Year 5 - you are 'Great Geographers!'

Friday 6 December 2024 Brrrr! We're off to the Arctic! This week in the EYFS we have been learning all about animals that live in the Arctic and Antarctic! We have located these places on a map and had a sensory ice tray as part of our Understanding The World learning, made polar bear collages as part of our Creative Art and Design learning, looked at numerals and finding the corresponding amount of 'marshmallows' for hot chocolate in Maths, wrote about and drew our favourite arctic animals in Writing, played with small world animals to develop our personal, social and emotional skills and worked out fine motor skills by making igloos out of blocks and Lego!

Friday 29 November 2024 Diva Lamps for Diwali! The children in the EYFS enjoyed making their own Diva Lamps as part of our Diwali focus. We learnt about the significance of the Diva lamps and how they are used to celebrate Diwali, the festival of light as part of our Understanding the World topic. The children worked their fine motor skills to shape the clay around a tea light, they learnt that if they use the warmth from their hands to warm up the dough, it would become more malleable. Then we got creative with the metallic paints! To further develop their Creative Art & Design skills, the children were given the choice of different metallic colours and used brushes to paint them in many different, beautiful designs.

Thursday 28 November 2024 Super Science! We had a fantastic time this week experimenting with light and shadows. We wanted to explore how shadows changes throughout the day depending on the position of the sun. It was amazing to see how the shadows shortened when the 'sun' (our torch) were at their shortest when the light was right over our object.

Thursday 28 November 2024 Tomb Raiders in Year 4 This week we have got our teeth stuck into our DT project for this term - pneumatics! We explored what pneumatic devices are, can be used for and how we use them in every day life. Initially we explored what balloon based pneumatics were before creating syringe pneumatic networks.

Friday 22 November 2024 Tune in to Y4 FM! This term in computing, the whole school is following the Creating Media strand of the Teach Computing curriculum. In Year 4, we have been exploring an increasingly popular form of media - podcasts! Having learnt about what a podcast is, we have been using Wave-pad to record our audio before exploring how we can re-record and edit the recording, inspect the soundwaves view to understand where we can trim the audio and explored the impact effects can have on our voices.

The children have had a fantastic day today, we learnt why the charity Children In Need do the work they do and we had lots of Pudsey themed activities to enjoy! I think the best (and tastiest!) part of the day was making Pudsey biscuits - yum yum!

Friday 15 November 2024 Friendship cupcakes This week, we were visited by SALUS, who delivered a wonderful workshop on the importance of friendship. We compared a good friendship to a cupcake, in that many ingredients needed to work well together to ensure the cake (friendship) is good! We discussed what ingredients a good friendship would need- love, kindness, sharing, care, respect, laughter, trust, liking the same games, fun and feeling safe to name a few!

Friday 15 November 2024 Introducing Nugget.... We had a fabulous day today making some DIY bird feeders. We have a resident Robin the children have now named 'Nugget'. He attends all forest school sessions and sings us a lovely song.

Friday 15 November 2024 Dinner time for the birds of East Farleigh Well, it's been a hoot and a half for our forest school and outdoor learning day in Year 4! Our little fledglings have been flapping their creative wings in forest school. Armed with saws, drills, and a whole lot of enthusiasm, they've been busy building bird feeders for our feathered friends in East Farleigh. After all, it's not just us humans who appreciate a good dinner time!

Friday 8 November 2024 A Remembrance Service to Remember The whole school gathered this morning for a very special service of Remembrance outside where we were joined by Rifleman Myles Rundall, who is uncle to our very own Aurora and Scarlett. Rifleman Rundall beautifully bugled The Last Post and an immaculately observed 2 minutes silence followed. The children were immaculately behaved and it really was a moving moment which allowed us to collectively reflect and remember those whom had sacrificed so much. I read out the exhortation:

Friday 8 November 2024 A Special Rememberance! Today we welcomed Scarlett T's uncle to the school for our Rememberance Service. He played the bugle, sounding the Last Post out across a perfectly silent and reflective playground. This experience was very special, poignant and made us think even more about all our learning surrounding World War 1.

Friday 8 November 2024 What's the matter? This week, we encouraged our students to explore the concept of matter in its various forms. We discovered that matter can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas. For instance, children observed how ice (a solid) melts into water (a liquid) and how water can then turn into steam (a gas) when heated. This exploration helped them grasp the idea that all matter is made up of tiny particles that behave differently depending on their state.

Tuesday 5 November 2024 Finding our way at Orienteering club Welcome to the Orienteering Club at East Farleigh Primary, where our young explorers learn the fine art of map reading and navigating their way through the great outdoors. If you’ve ever seen your child attempt to find their way back from the school playground, you’ll know this is a skill that could come in handy! We turn those puzzled looks into triumphant smiles as they master the map setting and develop orienteering skills that will make even the most seasoned adventurer proud.

Sunday 13 October 2024 Year 6 - Using arrays and cube links to problem solve This week, Year 6 have been creating arrays to solve prime number problems. Students commented that the arrays helped them to work out if a number was a prime number because they would only be able to make two arrays if it is a prime number.

Thursday 10 October 2024 Forest School Year Three Fantastic day today. Mrs Le Beaus hosted Year Three's forest school day today and the children had a brilliant time creating pumpkin art and brewing hot chocolate. We also painted leaves, went on a scavenger hunt, did observational drawings of leaves and tried our hand at worm charming! Yes that IS a thing! Thursday 10 October 2024 Oracy meets science As we move towards the end of our science learning, all about sound, we wanted to recap some of the key vocabulary and concepts we've covered so far this term. We were challenged to explore ways we could make links between cards such as insulation, vibration, volume, quieter, louder and sound wave. The children all developed different ideas and used their oracy sentence stems (I disagree with X because ..., so are you saying ...? and why do you think ...?).

Friday 4 October 2024 Forest School & Outdoor Learning in Yr 6! What a wonderful day! We have thoroughly enjoyed a wide selection of creative outdoor activities and the sunshine! Today we split the class in 2, with half the class completing Forest School activities in the morning and half class on the field, learning outdoors. Today the activities included: wood cookie pendants, a science/nature audit of the local area, a camp fire and hot chocolate, mini habitats and lot of team work! We have been so very impressed with the oracy skills on display today - keep it up everyone!

Friday 4 October 2024 Magnificent Mini-beasts This term, Class Two have been learning about Living Things and what is necessary for their survival. This week, we refined our knowledge of habitats by exploring microhabitats. We considered what microhabitats we might find within our school grounds, and made predictions about which mini-beasts we might find living there. We decided it would be best to explore the field, gardens and Forest School area.

Friday 4 October 2024 Islamic tiles in Year 4 Our exploration of Islamic Art has seen us produce some stunning Islamic inspired tiles this week. We further developed our clay skills, from Year 3, by using slip to help smooth and glue elements together.

Tuesday 1 October 2024 The Colour Monster This week in the EYFS our topic is 'My Emotions' and our book is 'The Colour Monster'. The children have loved listening to the story and identifying the different emotions felt within the book. We have had discussions about times when we have felt those feelings and ways we can work through them.

Friday 27 September 2024 Super Science in Yr 6! This week we have looked at classification with the use of observation, questioning and identification we have created a range of dichotomous keys. We have also started looking at the micro world of bacteria; we have an ongoing experiment on our windowsill, testing how well we have washed our hands...watch this space for the shocking results!

Wednesday 25 September 2024 Making the most of the outdoors! We have been getting outdoors and soaking up the sunshine in the EYFS over the last week. We have been working on our gross motor skills on the climbing equipment and spent time on the astro doing a circle time where we spoke about our senses and all the wonderful things we could see, hear, smell and feel in nature. We have also been loving our outdoor area, making some dinosaur shadow art, constructing obstacle courses and of course cooling down in the water tray!

Monday 23 September 2024 It's all Sumerian to me! Our history learning, this week, has led us to discover how the Ancient Sumerians communicated using the first ever written language - cuneiform! We practised writing our names before sending questions and answers to each other in the ancient script.

Sunday 22 September 2024 Brilliant Bewl Water! What a wonderful time and fantastic opportunity to improve our collaboration skills! It was incredible to see all the Year 6 children full immersed in such a wide range of different activities - everyone had a go, everyone grew in confidence and everyone felt proud of their achievements - what a brilliant day!

Friday 20 September 2024 Year 4 Outdoor Learning day This week we enjoyed a day of getting outside and learning outdoors. We all had an excellent forest school session with Mrs Le Beau before practising out map setting skills in orienteering. We rounded off the day giving our school garden some TLC, planting some bulbs ready for a colourful spring.

Friday 20 September 2024 Forest School Starts! It's here, we kick off our first Forest School session of the 2024/2025 school year. I am so excited to be able to share our activities and adventures with you.Forest school was first introduced in the UK 1993. It was founded in Sweden in 1982.The concept is to get children out in nature and learn from nature, build their confidence and work together.There is so much to explore and learn from the natural world.Today we took out year 4's for their first session of the school year. We had 2 sessions, one in the morning and then another after lunch. This is to ensure the whole class benefits. Groups of 15 are alot more manageable and meaningful for everyone involved.Today was all about learning how to make a den. There are so many skills involved. Our fine motor skills are put to the test, working as a team, problem solving and risk assessing. We needed to learn some basic knots - this helped us get our tarps attached to the trees and make shift 'poles'. We used tree branches found in our

Friday 20 September 2024 Buddies! This week we assigned the new EYFS children a Buddy from our Year 6 class. The children spent some time together playing in the EYFS classroom and outdoor area and getting to know each other. The Year 6 children have been amazing at looking out for the EYFS children on the playground, giving them a friendly smile and even playing together. We look forward to seeing their relationships flourish over the year, we will be awarding our Buddy Cup at the end of each term to one special Buddy Duo.

Tuesday 17 September 2024 Food for Thought! This week in the EYFS we have been using food for some sensory play. We have made some herby playdough by adding rosemary, coriander and mint to some plain dough. This activity has been great at developing the children's fine motor skills, they have used scissors to cut the herbs and playdough tools such as rolling pins and cutters to shape their dough. We also took the food outdoors and had a 'Fruit Punch' making station in the water tray! We mixed water with orange squash and gave the children oranges and apples to explore. The children used kitchen equipment to cut, mash and juice the fruit which they then mixed/whisked with the squash. The children thoroughly enjoyed role playing making and serving fruit punch and were engaged in this activity for a long time!

Friday 13 September 2024 The First Week for the EYFS! What a fantastic first week at school it has been for our new EYFS children! We have begun teaching Phonics straight away and this week the children have learnt the sounds 's', 'a', 't' and 'p'! They have been very keen to begin mark making and have even had a go at writing some of the sounds.

Thursday 12 September 2024 When computing meets science in Y4 Continuing our topic of 'Sound' in science this week, we explored the hypothesis What Patterns Can You Find Between the Strength of Vibrations and Volume of a Sound?. The children chose how they'd test this before recording their results using the decibel meter coded onto our Micro:Bits.
