Run, Run As Fast As You Can!

This week in the EYFS we have been reading the story 'The Gingerbread Man' as part of our Stories and Rhymes topic. We couldn't pass by the opportunity to make our very own gingerbread men so that is what we did! In our topic sessions the children took it in turns over the course of the week to weigh and combine the ingredients, form and roll the dough and cut and bake the gingerbread men. They were delicious! The children have not only developed their baking skills this week but this activity has enabled them to explore language involved in cooking, for example weight and capacity: more, less, half full, full etc., techniques: knead, roll, cut, mix etc. and words to describe the sensory aspect of cooking: squidgy dough, delicious biscuits and so many more!

We also did a science experiment to see what would have happened if the Gingerbread Man hadn't relied on the fox to cross the river and had tried to cross by himself... we popped one of the freshly baked gingerbread man in some water, made our predictions about what might happen and left it overnight. The next day we viewed the results and had a discussion about whether our predictions were right or not! The children thought this was great fun and all agreed the Gingerbread Man was right not to go in the water!

The children spent time this week working with an adult to think of ways the Gingerbread Man could have safely crossed the river without being eaten by the fox. Mostyn thought stepping stones were a good idea, while Bella A imagined a Pirate Ship would be fun. Jim thought the Gingerbread Man could fly across in a rocket however Zach thought a Jet Ski would be best. We had some fantastic ideas including: parachutes, balance beam, canoe, airplanes and more! It has been amazing to see such creativity from the class this week.
