VE Day celebrations
This week marked a momentous anniversary in our nations history - the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
To recognise this occasion, in Year 4, we had a day of learning all themed around the celebrations of the end of WW2. We engaged with a reading comprehension lesson, answering questions based on a letter sent by an evacuee to their loved ones upon news of the end of the war provided by the Imperial War Museum.
Later, in the afternoon, we held an oracy lesson around the theme of VE Day, exploring the impact of the war, and its end, on the children of Britain between 1939-1945. In response the class shared their responses through poetry, diaries and letters some of which are in the gallery below. Helping to set the scene, Y3 joined us for a sing-a-long to 40's classics such as Dame Vera Lynne's iconic song - We'll Meet Again. To finish the day we rounded our celebrations off with a surprise street party complete with cakes, biscuits and singing.
I was so impressed with how well the class engaged in our celebrations, with interest, maturity and their usual passion for learning. I hope our exciting activities marked the occasion in a memorable way for the class.
