Robots at the Ready!

This week, Class One kicked off their first programming unit in Computing.

As part of this lesson, the children were introduced to floor robots. In partners, they worked with either 'Bee Bots' or 'Blue Bots'.  They discussed what the buttons on a floor robot might do and then tried the buttons out. We spent time time linking an outcome to a button press. The children considered the direction command buttons, as well as the ‘clear memory’ and ‘run program’ buttons.

Our outcomes for this lesson were:

Objective: To explain what a given command will do

• I can predict the outcome of a command on a device
• I can match a command to an outcome
• I can run a command on a device

At the end of the lesson, the children played a game. Their partner would input a command to the robot and press 'go', and they then had to make an educated guess about what button was pressed. We loved our first programming lesson!
