Help! We're lost!
This week, during out outdoor learning, we focused our learning on geographical fieldwork skills. We discovered that the four cardinal directions are north (N), east (E), south (S) and west (W). The four intercardinal (or ordinal) directions are halfway between the cardinal directions: north-east (NE), south-east (SE), south-west (SW) and north-west (NW).
We then looked at using four-figure grid references and keys to describe the location of objects and places on a map, before discovering that in a four-figure grid reference, the two digit eastings come first, followed by the two digit northings. We used four-figure grid references to locate a square on a map.
Some of us were also treated to Mr Goodman's coordinates-in-practice. He explained he was taking part in a ultra marathon this weekend, where he has to not only run but navigate his way between check points. A perfect opportunity for the class to see when grid references and compasses can be used in real life.
