Phonics - ck, e, u, r

This week in Phonics in the EYFS we have learnt the sounds 'ck, e, u & r'. The children were excited to learn their first digraph - ck! A digraph is when two letters and placed together to make one sound (e.g. ch, sh, th). The children identified that the digraph 'ck' had a different sound button on the word cards when they began reading, we discussed that Phonemes (single sounds) have a dot sound button and digraphs have a line. They did brilliantly at reading words containing our new sounds during our phonics session!

Please see a little video below for how the sounds are pronounced and the cued articulation signs to go with them!

During our child initiated sessions we had a selection of activities linked to our new sounds, these included: writing letters in rice, making name rainbows, writing on chalkboards and decorating sock pictures to help us remember that 'ck' is always found in the middle or end of words (like in sock) as opposed to at the start.

We also display the sounds, sound card and objects from each phonics lesson throughout the day so the children can interact and play with them to further develop their phonetic awareness. The display look like this:
