Mathematics
Welcome to our Mathematics Curriculum page! At our school, we are committed to nurturing a love for mathematics and ensuring every child achieves mathematical mastery. We use the Power Maths scheme and the Mastering Number programmes to deliver an engaging and effective maths education. As part of the Kent & Medway Teaching for Mastery Pathway for six years, we also share our best practices with other schools.
Power Maths
Power Maths is an exciting and rigorous whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement in maths. It provides a structured approach that ensures all children develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.
- Interactive Lessons: Power Maths lessons are designed to be interactive and engaging. They encourage children to explore, discuss, and reason about mathematics, fostering a deeper understanding.
- Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) Approach: This approach helps children build a solid foundation by moving from concrete materials to pictorial representations and finally to abstract concepts.
- Differentiated Support: Power Maths provides support and challenges for all learners, ensuring that every child can progress at their own pace and achieve their full potential.
Curriculum Progression
Our Maths curriculum progression document will be available here soon.
Mastering Number Programmes
The Mastering Number programme supports our aim to develop strong number sense and fluency in Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2).
- Number Sense Development: Through daily practice and engaging activities, children develop a strong understanding of numbers, which is essential for more advanced mathematical concepts.
- Focus on Fluency: The programme emphasizes fluency in basic number skills, ensuring that children can perform calculations quickly and accurately.
- Problem Solving and Reasoning: Children are encouraged to think critically and solve problems, helping them to apply their number skills in a variety of contexts.
Teaching for Mastery Pathway & Workgroups
Our school has been part of the Kent & Medway Teaching for Mastery Pathway for six years. This involvement reflects our commitment to the mastery approach and continuous improvement in mathematics education.
- Collaborative Learning: We regularly collaborate with other schools to share best practices and innovative teaching methods, enhancing the quality of maths education across the region.
- Professional Development: Our teachers receive ongoing professional development to stay updated with the latest research and techniques in maths teaching, ensuring the highest standards in our classrooms.
- Impact and Success: Our participation in the Teaching for Mastery Pathway has led to significant improvements in our students' mathematical understanding and confidence.
Why Maths Mastery?
Mathematics mastery ensures that all children develop a deep, long-term, and adaptable understanding of maths. By focusing on conceptual understanding, mathematical thinking, and problem-solving, we prepare our students not just to perform well in tests, but to be confident and competent mathematicians in everyday life.
