Year 1 become Penguin News Reporters
Year 1 have been busy becoming budding news reporters as they explored the exciting story of Jonty Gentoo! The children followed Jonty’s incredible adventure as he set off hoping to reach the South Pole, only to accidentally find himself at the North Pole!
To begin their learning journey, the children worked hard to order the story using pictures, carefully thinking about what happened at each stage of Jonty’s adventure. They then brought the story to life through role play, working in groups to retell the events and take on the different characters. There was some fantastic retelling as the children acted out Jonty’s journey and his unexpected encounter with a polar bear, a bird and a sailor who helped to rescue him.
Once they were confident with the sequence of events, the children independently ordered the story in their books using pictures. This helped them to organise their ideas and prepare for the exciting final challenge – becoming news reporters!
The children then used everything they had learned to write their very own news reports about Jonty Gentoo’s adventure. They worked hard to include important details and report the incredible events as if they were there themselves.
We are incredibly impressed with the quality of writing in Year 1. The children have shown fantastic enthusiasm, creativity and determination throughout this learning journey. Their dedication to becoming news reporters has been wonderful to see, and we are so proud of the effort they have put into their writing.
Well done, Year 1! We think you have some very talented young reporters among you!
