Writing in the EYFS

This term, our EYFS children have been thoroughly enjoying taking part in Drawing Club, and it has quickly become a highlight of the week. Drawing Club, developed by Greg Bottrill, is a creative approach to early literacy that brings storytelling, imagination, and mark-making together in an engaging and meaningful way. Each session encourages children to immerse themselves in a story or theme, before expressing their ideas through drawing and early writing.

What makes Drawing Club particularly special is the sense of ownership it gives the children. They have real autonomy over what they choose to draw and how they represent their ideas on paper. This freedom allows them to build confidence in their creativity while also developing important early writing skills. It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and pride they take in their work, as well as the progress they are making in communicating their ideas.

We are also delighted to have introduced our new Little Wandle handwriting books this week. These resources are already supporting the children in developing correct letter formation and improving their pencil grip—both essential skills as they prepare for the transition into Year 1. By practising these foundational skills early, we are helping to ensure that children can write comfortably, confidently, and accurately.

In addition to this, the children have been working hard on their independent writing every morning following their phonics sessions. This dedicated time allows them to apply their newly learned sounds in a meaningful context, reinforcing their phonics knowledge while building independence as writers.

We are incredibly proud of the progress the children are making across all areas of early writing. To celebrate their achievements, please see some of their work below.
