The Land of the Dinosaurs

This week in our EYFS classroom, the children embarked on an exciting journey back in time as we explored the fascinating world of dinosaurs. Our young learners showed incredible enthusiasm and curiosity as they discovered more about these prehistoric creatures.

During our topic sessions, the children researched a variety of dinosaurs and learned about when they lived, helping them begin to understand the concept of the past. They also got hands-on by creating their own salt dough fossils, carefully pressing shapes and patterns to mimic real discoveries. Creativity was in full swing as the children crafted dinosaur skeleton collages and explored the different features of dinosaurs by writing about their unique attributes and labelling their body parts.

In our writing lessons, we focused on the story The Girl and the Dinosaur. The children engaged brilliantly with the text, sharing their ideas and expressing their thoughts through their own writing.

Child-initiated learning provided even more opportunities for exploration and imagination. The children made dinosaur fossils using playdough, created an impressive brachiosaurus craft from paper plates, and enjoyed drawing their very own dinosaurs with fantastic detail and creativity.

Outdoors, the adventure continued with lots of digging in our muddy area, where the children took on the role of palaeontologists, searching for fossils and acting out their own dinosaur adventures.

In Oracy this week, we introduced a new talk technique called “the traverse.” The children are making fantastic progress with their language and conversation skills, showing increasing confidence in sharing their ideas and listening to others. We had a lively and thoughtful debate around our question of the week, “Would a dinosaur make a good pet?” The children impressed us with their reasoning, taking turns to speak and building on each other’s ideas.

It has been a truly roarsome week full of discovery, creativity, and imagination. The children have had so much fun, and we are very proud of all their hard work. Please take a look at the photos below to see some of the wonderful activities they have been enjoying!
