What a Wonderful First Full Week!

What a fantastic first full week we have had in EYFS! It has been a big milestone for the children as they have stayed at school until after lunchtime, and we are incredibly proud of how well they have settled into their new routines. They have been busy learning what school is all about, getting to know the adults in our classroom, making new friendships and becoming familiar with their new surroundings.

Our focus this week has been settling into school and learning our rules and routines. During our morning jobs, we have been reciting our class charter and school rules together. We call this our ‘Class Story’, and the children are already becoming familiar with the important messages that help us to be kind, respectful, safe and ready to learn. We have also been learning the days of the week, talking about the date and beginning to understand the routines that help our school day run smoothly.

A very important part of our week has been Child Initiated Learning. The children have been exploring all of the different areas of our provision, discovering what is available and learning how to use the resources independently. Through play, children are able to follow their interests, solve problems, practise new skills, develop language and communication, work with others and make sense of the world around them. Play really is one of the best ways for young children to learn! We have loved watching the children become increasingly confident as they explore and make their own choices.

We have also been thinking about belonging and what makes each of us special. The children have created their own self-portraits, which will form a new display outside our classroom. We have talked about how we are all different and unique, and how these differences are something to celebrate. Our display will be a wonderful reminder that everyone belongs in our EYFS family.

Of course, we have made the most of our outdoor provision too! The children have enjoyed spending time outside, exploring, playing together and getting to know our outdoor environment. We have seen lots of lovely moments of cooperation, imagination and friendship developing throughout the week.

Most importantly, we have seen the beginnings of a wonderful class community forming. The children are getting to know one another, developing new friendships and building relationships with the adults who will be supporting them throughout their Reception year.

I am so incredibly proud of every single one of them. They have worked so hard this week to learn new routines, try new things, make friends and become part of our school community. What a brilliant start to their Reception journey!
