Maths
This year we will be continuing with our Power Maths learning, building on our previous place value, addition & subtraction and multiplication and division knowledge as well as other core mathematical topics. Our structure for the year can be seen below. Due to term dates and progress of the class, the order of topics may change slightly.
Later, in June, all year 4 students will complete the MTC.
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a key stage 2 assessment to be taken by pupils at the end of year 4 (in June). The MTC’s purpose is to ensure the times tables knowledge is at the expected level. In the 2024/2025 academic year, the multiplication tables check (MTC) is statutory for primary schools.
The Multiplication Times Tables Check is an online test where the pupils are asked 25 questions on times tables 2 to 12. For every question, you have 6 seconds to answer, and in between the questions, there is a 3-second rest. Questions about the 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12 times table come up more often. The questions are generated randomly based on the rules of the MTC.
Reading
Children in Key Stage 2 at East Farleigh use the Accelerated Reader (A.R.) program to support their independence in selecting books that are appropriately pitched to promote fluency and comprehension skills at exactly the right level. This helps to secure the very best progress from each and every child, whilst still allowing plenty of choice and autonomy is being able to select books that appeal to their individual interests.
It has proved to be a very effective system for motivating children and ensuring good progress in reading. Children have access to a range of beautiful books in their class libraries; these are regularly replenished from our school library.
Spelling / Vocabulary Building
In Key Stage 2, the children follow Pathways to Spell, through daily teaching of spelling objectives, which ensures that pupils become confident and competent spellers. At home, some of the spellings they made need to recap on are common exception words for years 1-6.
Enrichment across the curriculum
As part of our history curriculum we will be learning about Ancient Civilisations and the Anglo Saxons.
As part of our geography learning we will discover all thinks rivers and mountains. As part of this unit we will be visiting the Horton Kirby Outdoor Education Centre for their Rivers Study Day.
You could also bring your child's learning to life by:
-Visiting the Science Museum,
-Visiting the British Museum,
-Visiting Maidstone Museum,
-Go for a walk along the River Medway and observing how it differs at varying points on its course.
