Safeguarding and Child Protection

East Farleigh Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We ensure that consistent effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff at school. All concerns are reviewed by our trained Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) in compliance with the government 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' guidance:

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm, this includes:

• Protecting children from abuse and maltreatment.
• Preventing harm to children’s health or development.
• Ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care.
• Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.

Child protection is part of the safeguarding process and focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm.

Traffic light lanyard system

When you visit East Farleigh Primary School you will be introduced to our traffic light lanyard system. This system runs alongside our robust safeguarding measures which will begin as soon as you enter the school.

If you are provided with a green lanyard, this means that you are a member of East Farleigh Primary School's staffing team.

If you are provided with a yellow lanyard, this means that we have completed and received satisfactory confirmation of safeguarding checks.

If you are provided with a red lanyard, this means that you will be accompanied by a member of staff for the length of your visit.

Operation Encompass

Children are negatively impacted by experiencing domestic abuse and without early intervention and support this negative impact can last through a child’s life course. Domestic abuse can impact upon social, psychological, physical, emotional and behavioural outcomes with an often negative impact upon a child’s academic success. Experiencing domestic abuse has been identified as an Adverse Childhood Experience.

Operation Encompass aims, by directly connecting police and schools, to secure better outcomes for children , to enable schools to better understand the impact living with domestic abuse has upon children, to help schools to better understand a child’s lived experience and to therefore be able to support and nurture each child , making a child’s day better and giving them a better tomorrow.

Prevent Strategy

As part of our commitment to safeguarding and child protection, we fully support the government's Prevent Strategy, and take guidance from Teaching Approaches to help build resilience to extremism.

What is the Prevent Strategy?

The Prevent strategy is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism by:

• responding to the ideological challenge we face from terrorism and aspects of extremism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views
• providing practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support
• working with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health)

Safeguarding Topics

In response to the increased independence of many children in Key Stage Two, particularly those who have permission to walk down the hill or go home alone, East Farleigh Primary School supports ‘Clever Never Goes’.

‘Clever Never Goes’ moves the focus away from strangers and instead teaches children to recognise when someone (whether they are known to the child or not) is trying to persuade them to go with them. The programme is designed to be fun and positive, whilst at the same time delivering a serious message and giving children practical safety skills and confidence to engage with the outside world.

In addition to the schools lesson you too can help your child to understand the Clever Never Goes message. You can download (free of charge) a Clever Never Goes home pack at the website www.clevernevergoes.org/parents. The home pack contains some great ideas for how to approach this topic with your children as well as games and activities.

Let's talk PANTS

With the help of our friendly dinosaur Pantosaurus, PANTS is a simple way to talk to your child about staying safe from sexual abuse.

You’ve probably already talked to your child about things like crossing the road safely. Talking to them about staying safe from sexual abuse is just as easy with our PANTS rules and Pantosaurus song.
