Reading

At East Farleigh Primary School, we are dedicated to fostering a love for reading and ensuring every child develops strong literacy skills. Our comprehensive reading curriculum is designed to support and inspire students at every stage of their reading journey.

Phonics and Early Reading

In Key Stage 1, we use the Little Wandle phonics scheme. This highly effective program provides a structured approach to phonics, helping children develop essential decoding skills and confidence in reading. Through engaging and interactive lessons, students learn to recognize letter sounds, blend them together, and read simple words and sentences.

Developing Reading Skills

As students progress, we introduce the Steps to Read program. This initiative builds on phonics knowledge, focusing on reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development. By exploring a wide range of texts and genres, children enhance their understanding of stories and information, improving their ability to think critically and respond to texts thoughtfully.

Accelerating Reading Progress

To further support and accelerate reading development, we implement the Accelerated Reader program. This program encourages independent reading and helps us track and support each child’s reading progress. Students choose books that match their reading level, take quizzes to assess their understanding, and set personal reading goals. This personalized approach ensures that each child is challenged appropriately and motivated to continue their reading journey.

A Love for Reading

At East Farleigh, we believe that fostering a love for reading is key to academic success. Our classrooms are filled with a diverse selection of books, and we encourage students to explore different genres and authors. Regular reading sessions, book talks, and library visits further enhance our students’ reading experiences.

By integrating these effective programs into our reading curriculum, we aim to create confident, enthusiastic readers who are well-prepared for their future learning adventures.
