Art & Design
Introduction
At East Farleigh, we believe that Art and Design play a crucial role in the holistic development of our students. Our curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, self-expression, and confidence in every child, while also fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through a broad range of activities and projects, we aim to develop our students’ artistic talents and appreciation for the visual arts.
Curriculum Overview
Our Art and Design curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum and is delivered through engaging and diverse projects that encourage students to explore different mediums, techniques, and styles. From painting and drawing to sculpture and digital media, our program provides a comprehensive foundation in the visual arts.
Progression of Art & Design
A document detailing progression of Art will be available here soon.
Key Stage 1 (KS1)
In Key Stage 1, students are introduced to the basics of Art and Design. They learn to use a variety of materials and techniques to create their own artworks. Key learning objectives include:

Key Stage 2 (KS2)
In Key Stage 2, students build on their foundational skills and begin to develop more sophisticated techniques and concepts. Key learning objectives include:
• Enhancing drawing and painting skills with more detail and precision.
• Experimenting with 3D forms, including sculpture and mixed media.
• Understanding and applying principles of design, such as balance, contrast, and harmony.
• Studying a wider range of artists and art movements to inspire and inform their own work.
• Using sketchbooks to plan, develop, and evaluate their ideas.
Facilities and Resources
We are proud to offer well-equipped classrooms with a wide range of materials and tools to support our students’ creativity. Our dedicated ‘Garden Room’ provides an inspiring environment for smaller group sessions in Art and Design, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. The tranquil adjoining deck area is a perfect space for outdoor art projects, allowing students to connect with nature while they create.
Co/Extra Curricular Activities
To further enrich our Art and Design curriculum, we offer a variety of extra-curricular activities:
• Art clubs for different year groups, providing additional opportunities for creative exploration.
• School-wide art exhibitions to celebrate and showcase the students’ work.
• Arts Festival showcasing whole school artistic talents.
Digital Integration
We integrate digital technology into our Art and Design curriculum, teaching students to use digital tools and software to create and manipulate images. This modern approach ensures that our students are well-versed in both traditional and contemporary artistic practices.
Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to nurture and develop every child’s creative potential. By providing a supportive and stimulating environment, we encourage our students to express themselves, think critically, and appreciate the world around them through the lens of art. We are committed to fostering a lifelong love of the arts and helping our students to become confident and creative individuals.
